Dear Diederik,

I don’t quite understand your question. What is certain is that the reaction between O2 and H2, whether in a reaction vessel or an engine, will proceed in exactly the same way. This means that if in one case an electric charge would arise, it will also happen in the other case.

BUT, what electrical charge do you mean? As far as I know, O2 can react with 2 times an H2 and then give two particles of H2O, but without any electrical charges involved. So it’s not entirely clear to me where you get that statement “and then an electric charge is released”? You might want to check your sources again!
