You probably wear your Apple Watch all day, and sometimes at night. Yet we often pay more attention to the watch itself than to the strap, while the strap determines how comfortable your watch is, what it looks like and whether it can withstand your activities. A strap that’s perfect for the gym is rarely the strap you want to take with you to a business meeting.
In this guide we therefore do not look at specific models, but at the materials and use. This way you can choose a strap that suits your wrist and your day – whether you just got your first Apple Watch or already have half a drawer full of straps.
First things first: size and compatibility
Before choosing a band, it’s helpful to know that Apple Watch bands are interchangeable within two size groups, regardless of generation:
- The smaller cases (38, 40, 41 and 42 mm) share the same straps.
- The larger cases (42, 44, 45, 46 and 49 mm, including the Ultra) also share the same straps.
A strap that you bought years ago for a Series 4 often fits perfectly on a more recent model with the same case size. To be sure, check which case size (in millimeters) your watch has before purchasing.

Original or a strap from another brand?
Apple’s original straps are beautifully made, but also pricey: they start around €49 and go up to around €199 for a titanium Milanese strap – a link bracelet is well above that. If you want different straps for different occasions, that will quickly add up.
That is why many people choose straps from other brands. They often offer a much larger choice of colors, materials and styles for a lower price, so you can switch more easily between sports, work and weekends. Brands such as Solace Bands for example, focus on skin-friendly, hypoallergenic straps in a variety of materials – from woven nylon to leather and metal – that are comfortable enough to wear all day.
One thing to pay attention to with non-original straps: the connection (the connector) must fit neatly into the case of your watch. Cheap straps are sometimes too loose or too tight. Therefore, read the reviews and pay attention to the quality of the connector before ordering.
Sports band: for sweat, water and the gym
The classic sports band is made of fluoroelastomer (FKM), a type of high-quality rubber. It is waterproof, resistant to sweat and can be rinsed clean in an instant under the tap. This makes this the most obvious strap for those who exercise, swim or simply want to put a lot of strain on the watch.
Strong in: swimming, strength training, running and anything where the strap gets wet or dirty. Less nice if: you wear it all day in a warm room – rubber does not breathe and can feel a bit clammy or sticky. It also looks a bit sporty and less neat.
A practical detail: with an original sports strap you often receive two strap lengths (S/M and M/L), so that you can adjust the fit to the thickness of your wrist.
Woven sports band (Sport Loop): the comfort champion
In our opinion, the woven nylon strap, better known as the Sport Loop, is one of the most comfortable choices for daily use. It is light, soft, breathable and infinitely adjustable with Velcro. On a hot day you will immediately notice the difference with rubber: your wrist stays cooler and the strap does not stick.
Strong in: all-day wear, hot days, sensitive skin and those who like a light strap. Less pleasant if: you swim a lot or exercise intensively – woven fabric absorbs water and sweat and dries slowly. It can also become a bit frizzy over time.

Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop: comfortable, but pay attention to the size
The Solo Loop (one piece of liquid silicone) and the Braided Solo Loop (braided) have no closure or buckle. You just slide them over your hand. It is incredibly comfortable and looks sleek, but this is also where the biggest pitfall lies: you cannot adjust the size afterwards. If you choose incorrectly, the strap will be too tight or it will slip off your wrist.
A few tips to prevent that:
- Use the official, printable measuring strip and print it at 100% (without scales), otherwise the size will be incorrect.
- Measure your wrist at the end of the day, when it is at its thickest.
- Are you hesitating between two sizes for the braided version? Then choose the smaller ones – braided straps stretch slightly over time.
- Please note that you will need to replace the entire strap if your wrist size changes (for example, by losing or gaining weight).
Strong in: comfort and a seamless, modern look without a buckle that digs into your wrist. Less nice if: you are not sure of your size – this is by far the most frequently returned type of strap.
Leather: stylish in the office, but not in the shower
A leather strap immediately gives your Apple Watch a neat, classic look. For the office, dinner or business meeting, leather is hard to beat.
But leather and moisture don’t go well together. Sweat, rain and certainly swimming water discolor, dry out and ultimately crack leather, and can cause an unpleasant odor. So wear a leather strap consciously: for neat moments, not for the gym or the shower. If you want the look of leather without the maintenance, you can also look at vegan (artificial leather) alternatives.
Milanese, link bracelet and titanium: the neat and premium choice
Do you want something that really looks neat? Then you quickly end up with metal. The Milanese strap is made of a finely woven stainless steel mesh with a magnetic clasp, making it infinitely adjustable and surprisingly comfortable. A link bracelet is the heaviest and most formal, and the Ultra comes in a lightweight titanium version that feels premium without being too heavy.
Note two things. Metal can retain sweat during intensive exercise and is then less pleasant. And do you have sensitive skin? Cheap metal straps sometimes contain nickel, which can cause irritation – then consciously choose hypoallergenic stainless steel or titanium.
Do you have an Apple Watch Ultra?
The Ultra uses the straps from the larger size group and has a few of its own, more robust options aimed at adventure and outdoor sports – think a sturdier, better secured strap for the mountains, a lightweight version for running and a water-resistant version for water sports. Which of these best suits your activity depends greatly on what exactly you are going to do; A separate article can be written about that (and that comparison is also already on appletips).
Quick selection aid
Don’t feel like reading everything? This is the short version:
- Do a lot of sports or swimming → sports band (FKM rubber), or a water-resistant Ultra option.
- All-day comfort, even in warm weather → woven Sport Loop (nylon).
- Office, dinner or business → leather or a Milanese/metal strap.
- Sensitive skin or allergy → hypoallergenic FKM, nylon or titanium; avoid cheap nickel-containing metal.
- Sleek, seamless look → (Braided) Solo Loop, provided you measure the size correctly.
Finally
The right band really changes how you experience your Apple Watch. Over time, most people discover that one band isn’t enough: a rubber band for the gym, a woven one for weekdays, and something dressier for special occasions. Therefore, start with your most important use, choose the material accordingly, and gradually expand your collection from there. This way your watch always fits comfortably – and it suits what you are doing that day.
