Ookla carried out a speed test in the third and fourth quarter of 2020 among half a million users of various mobile networks in the Netherlands. This shows that KPN has the best and fastest mobile network, with the highest download and upload speeds and the best mobile coverage of all Dutch operators.
KPN’s network came out on top with an average download and upload speed of 92.5 Mbps and 19.8 Mbps respectively. At T-Mobile, the average download speed was 86.2 Mbps, while the upload speed was 18.9 Mbps. At Vodafone, the average download and upload speed was 76.5 Mbps and 16.1 Mbps.
Roughly a year earlier, T-Mobile had the fastest mobile networkAccording to Ookla then, the average speeds were significantly lower than now. For example, the download speed of the four major players in 2019 averaged 59.9 Mbps, while the upload speed averaged 15.6 Mbps. Figures from 2017 and 2018 also show that the average internet speeds continue to increase in the Netherlands.
Of the large cities, the download speed of KPN was the highest in Rotterdam at 102.4 Mbps. If we only look at 5G, then users in Amsterdam with an iPhone 12 get the best 5G network via KPN, Ookla concluded.
Quality of coverage
In the third and fourth quarter of 2020, Ookla also compared the quality of the mobile coverage of users on the various mobile networks and with a coverage score of 833 points, KPN also scored the best in the Netherlands here. T-Mobile and Vodafone received a coverage score of 640 and 590.
At the end of 2020, 5G from KPN was already named the fastest 5G network in the Netherlands by Ookla and Umlaut Connect also concluded that KPN had gotten off the grid with 5G.
KPN is currently implementing large-scale innovations to the mobile network and is also rolling out fiber optics, so that in time more than 80% of the Netherlands will have access to a connection at the speed of light.
