who knows what kind of fly bitten / stung me?

I was bitten / stung in my garden by a very small dark gray / black fly with transparent wings with a black dot / stripe. The shape of the wings resembles that of a mothfly but narrower. rubbing to death didn’t work, animal is hard. The size of the fly is similar to that of a fruit fly.

The fly had settled well.

I immediately sucked the bite out, but after a day it started to itch enormously, worse than a mosquito bite.

Since then I have seen such a fly more often in my backyard.

I had never seen the fly before.

Who knows what kind of fly this was?

I’ve already searched the internet but can’t find anything.

Thanks in advance, Esther

Answer

Dear Esther,

last week we already received an analogous question. The answer then was the following:

Without a photo or further description of the animal or its behavior, your question is a particularly difficult task. One of the possibilities is that it concerns tickling mosquitoes (Simulium equinum). Although the animals look like small flies, they are indeed “mosquitoes”. A condition for their presence is the availability of running water because the larvae develop there. There must therefore be a fairly fast-flowing river in the area. Otherwise it is another small biting insect.

Kind regards,

Rudy
