Why are you so hungry after swimming?

Asker: Reuben, 10 years

Answer

reuben,

Swimming is a sport in which you use a lot of muscles (muscles of the head, trunk, arms and legs).
As a result, you also use more ‘fuel’ or calories than in other sports.
The fuels we use in our body are mainly fats and sugars.
When we consume calories in our body, the brain sends out a signal to replenish the energy in our body and therefore you get a feeling of hunger.

Some researchers also mention that water temperature may play a role.
Swimming in cold water can cause our bodies to lose heat and constrict blood vessels.
The brain again plays a role here: it sends signals to your body to warm up again. This can be done by including food.
