Why do European trucks have such a flat front?

Doesn’t this create a lot of air resistance?

Answer

The reason why the tractor (and cab of regular trucks) is vertically rigid has only one explanation: to maximize payload. Because the maximum length is calculated with the cabin, an attempt is made to make maximum use of the loading space. For this reason, the engine is processed in the cab and not as in known American / Australian models that place the engine in front of the cab.

In Australia the length is between 26 and 53.5 m, in Canada between 38 and 54 m.

Belgian (European regulations) maximum length of vehicles:

  • vehicle other than a bus or coach: 12 m;
  • bus or coach with 2 axles: 13.5 m;
  • bus or coach with more than 2 axles: 15 m;
  • vehicle with bellows: 18.75 m;
  • bus or coach with trailer: 18.75 m.

We do not take into account the Longer and Heavier Truck Combination (LHV) whose maximum length is 25.25 m; its use is regulated (certain circumstances).
