Why do plants produce fruit?

What is the benefit to the plant to make fruits or vegetables?

Asker: Nelson, age 12

Answer

Dear Nelson,

just as animals (and humans) have babies to survive, plants also make babies. In plants, however, these are hidden in the seeds.

In order to properly protect these babies, the seeds are also hidden in a fruit.

In some cases, that fruit also helps to move the seeds, by the wind or, for example, by birds that are interested in the pulp (but not the seeds).

All fruits are fruits, but by ‘vegetables’ we can also mean very different things (eg roots, stems, leaves…).
