A colleague recently asked me if I knew why feces sometimes float and sometimes sink immediately after you’ve been to “the big toilet”. As he and I knew no answer to it.
Answer
The fact that any object, be it a piece of wood or a weekday turd, floats on water or not depends on the density or density of the piece of wood or pooh as compared to the density of water itself. Density or density is the weight per volume unit, e.g. in kilograms per m³. All objects with a density lower than water float, denser objects sink. Depending on your last supper, your feces may be “heavier” or “lighter,” and may or may not float or sink.
