Why does a car’s remote control work from a greater distance if you hold it to your head?

I once saw on TV that the remote control to unlock a car works at a greater distance by holding it to your head.

I’ve tried it myself and it does work.

Can you explain why this is so?

Answer

Dear Bart,

Each remote control uses electromagnetic radiation emitted by an internal antenna. Now you may be able to use your head as an additional antenna, in order to obtain a more focused electromagnetic field, as your head influences the radiated field of the antenna. But it’s not just your head, the surface you’re standing on and other nearby objects affect the field’s directivity.
The influence on an electromagnetic field of an antenna is greater the greater the conductivity of the substance from which the antenna is constructed.
