Does your nose start to run when you go jogging? Why this is happening more often again in autumn – and how you can prevent it.
Everything was fine at home, but after a short time on the running track my nose began to run. This phenomenon is now plaguing joggers more frequently in the colder times of the year. But what’s behind it?
Runny nose is normal when exercising in winter
“The nose usually runs when there is a big difference in temperature to cold,” says Axel Klein, a sports doctor from Dresden.
If the body is then challenged by sport, slight swelling occurs in sensitive or well-supplied mucous membranes. More fluid forms and escapes through the mucous membranes – and the nose runs.
A thin cloth can help
Runners don’t have to worry. “A runny nose while jogging is nothing bad, you can let it run,” says Axel Klein. “It also won’t affect performance.”
If you want to take countermeasures, you can put a thin cloth over your mouth and nose in winter to reduce the large temperature difference. Tube scarves are well suited.
Runny runner’s nose in summer? Allergy testing makes sense
And what if your nose runs while jogging, especially in spring or summer? Then doctor Klein recommends an allergy test. The culprit behind the runny nose may be pollen, which irritates the mucous membranes.
