Why is it that a tram can run on one catenary?

I know that a tram runs on electricity. And that to drive a motor you need a positive and a negative pole. But a tram usually only has one catenary (I only see one in Ghent). How can the tram receive both poles?

Answer

Dear Otto

The catenary that you see shows the positive voltage. A tram has metal (conductive) wheels and these are in contact with the tracks, the tracks serve as a negative pole.

Kind regards
