Why is it that women score so low in the world of arts and sciences?

Big names in the art world (composers, painters, poets, etc.): it’s a man’s business. Same finding in the field of science. Nobel Prizes practically an exclusive men’s affair. How come ?

Are men more gifted?

Answer

No, men are not more gifted than women, but both sexes are in some respects ‘oriented’ differently, partly have different values and ideals. This different orientation partly has to do with a partly different hormonal household, but in my opinion much more with the different upbringing and opportunities that men and women received or still receive in many cultures. Change that situation and in a few decades you will see a catch-up movement (for example in terms of students at universities and colleges) among women. I don’t know for sure how that works at all kinds of academies, but make sure that girls and women have kept up with boys and men there too. But it is of course a fact that women often opt for motherhood and they usually want and/or have to put more time and energy into it than the average man; in our society they often have to pay for the offspring almost on their own. Hubby can then of course spend more time on art and science. It is also likely that the things most valued in the ‘classical’ worlds of art and science are especially those most practiced by men. I highly doubt that Nobel Prizes are almost an exclusive men’s affair. You can probably find that out for yourself by ‘googleing’ or on Wikipedia.

Your question is an old question. She has often been discussed, especially by men. For example, in the early 1860s Francis Galton, a great scholar and nephew of Charles Darwin, wrote Hereditary Genius (hereditary geniuses), a survey of genealogies of famous scientists, artists, etc… showing that genius is hereditary, in the (better) family. Galton’s evidence now looks very weak, is no longer tenable. It is important in this context that not one woman appeared in Galton’s overview, although they did exist, albeit to a lesser extent (because of the social factors outlined above).

Sincerely,
