Why is space infinite?

I find it strange that space is infinite. How come?

Answer

You are asking way too many questions at once. Is space really infinite? And, if so, why is it so?

You know, my first reaction when I read your question is this: does Ilias know what he means when he talks about space? You speak of ‘the’ space, which means that you take for granted that that space exists. Of course she’s there, but – at the same time – if it weren’t for me, I wouldn’t be able to ask myself that question. Or better, not allowed to ask.

We are born in space and time, we are in a sense a product of it. Without space and time we could not exist. But – and this is strange – once we think we are there, we think that space and time are ‘absolute’, that they would also be there if the world were not there. And we don’t actually know! As a product of the universe, we don’t know the last word.

Today, when we say that space is infinite, it means that we can always go further. The universe is expanding faster than we can keep up. There’s no end to it. So the space is getting bigger and bigger. For us. And also for everyone who has learned to experience what ‘space’ is in the same way within our universe.
