Wibra launches app that gives customers a discount for recycling

Wibra has started collecting plastic packaging for recycling in its stores. Customers are rewarded with discount points for this. That is how it works.

Wibra rewards customers with a discount

The average Dutch person uses 48 kilos of plastic packaging and most of it is not recycled. In addition, it appears from research that 79% of consumers want to contribute to a better environment. That is why Wibra is starting a pilot together with Impackt. That is a company that has developed an app with a loyalty program for this. With this app, customers are rewarded when they return empty plastic containers for recycling. This may also be packaging that comes from other stores.

That is how it works

The trial has started in 25 branches in North and South Holland and will last four months. In those Wibra branches there are special bins for empty plastic packaging. With the Impackt app, customers can easily scan the barcodes on the packaging and the QR code on the recycling bin. They then see the CO2 impact of their contribution. The more packages that are returned, the more points the customer gets. Those points can then be redeemed in the app for discount coupons on products at the Wibra stores.

  • Different types of empty plastic packaging can be returned, such as packaging of cleaning products, care products and detergents.
  • With the points, which are determined on the basis of the CO2 reduction, consumers receive discounts on various products.
  • Consumers receive discounts, CO2 emissions are reduced and Wibra attracts more customers to their stores.

Many more companies have started similar sustainable initiatives. For example, Albert Heijn has launched the Overblijvers app that allows customers to buy bags with products that are almost past their best-before date. Rabobank recently introduced a feature in its mobile banking app that allows customers to see how much carbon emissions each euro spent causes. And KPN will pay customers when they hand in their old telephones.

What do you think of this pilot? Are you going to participate? Let us know in the comments.
