Windows 10 slow after the update: this is how you fix it

It’s always a good idea to quickly download an update for Windows 10 when it’s available. However, it can happen that you run into problems, such as the computer suddenly slowing down. You can read how to solve that in this article.

The problem can have several causes. For example, an update itself can cause a malfunction, system files get corrupted and background applications play tricks. If you’re not exactly sure why your system is so slow, roll back to the previous version of Windows 10.

You do that through Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View Update History† Now click on the blue text Uninstall updates† Now a new window will appear with an overview of installed components. Uninstall the update(s) that you think are (or are) problematic.

Check Windows 10 for broken files

If that doesn’t help or if you don’t want to do that, it’s a good idea to check Windows 10 for corrupted files. You do that by the Windows System File Checker to use. This component within Windows 10 scans the entire system and checks the integrity of the system. It also allows you to recover missing or corrupted files when needed. You can read more about this in this Windows System File Checker article.

Once you have completed all the steps, you will need to restart your computer. If the source of the problem was a corrupted file, the problem is likely fixed.

Finally, we can see if background applications might be causing problems. Windows 10 allows quite a few apps to run in the background; whether you need it or not. It can therefore help to deactivate or even remove certain apps, if you are sure that it is not harmful.

Open the Start menu and type in ‘privacy’. Open the privacy settings and in the left menu go to Background apps† Here, select the apps that are not allowed to run in the background. You have to move the slider from right to left (the blue box will then become transparent and the dot will be on the left from now on).

Two reading tips

Finally, we have two general tips. Once the problems persist, you may want to bring your system to an earlier point. You can read exactly how that works in our article about System Restore. In addition, you can always choose to perform a clean Windows 10 installation.
