‘With these Chromebooks you will soon be able to game via Steam’

Chromebooks are rumored to work with the popular game platform Steam. A list of Chromebooks that will soon support Steam has also been discovered and it only concerns high-end devices with recent hardware.

Chromebooks and Steam

The integration of Steam into Chrome OS is taking shape. For those unfamiliar with PC gaming, Steam is the best-known online store for PC games, and the app also serves as a library from which to launch games. In a code change on the developer site Chromium Gerrit Google shares a list of Chromebook models that will soon work with Steam, it discovered 9To5Google

It concerns six existing models from ASUS, Acer and HP. Google refers to each device with a code name and there is also one unannounced model from Lenovo. Below is the list of Chromebooks that will work with Steam:

  • Volta – Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1H)
  • Volet – Acer Chromebook 515
  • Voxel – Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
  • Delbin – ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
  • Drobit – ASUS Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
  • Elemi – HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook

High hardware requirements

Rumors of an integration of Steam into Chrome OS have been circulating for two years now. First it involved Google employees working on an integration of Steam and also testing the Steam client. Last year, that story continued with a gaming mode for Chromebooks that focuses on Steam games.

It seems that not just any Chromebook will soon be able to play games on Steam. This requires that the device has an 11th generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and at least 7 GB of RAM. So it only concerns high-end models. Google is also working with manufacturers to release dedicated gaming Chromebooks that come complete with RGB-lit keyboards.

All games compatible?

It remains to be seen how far-reaching the integration of Steam into Chrome OS will be. Google’s operating system is based on Linux, while most games on Steam are made for Windows. We do know that Steam is currently making a strong effort to make Windows games compatible for Linux systems using the Proton software† Steam is doing that because it’s releasing its own handheld gaming PC this month called the “Steam Deck” that also runs on Linux.

The question is therefore whether Chromebooks will also work with Proton on Steam. What do you think? Are you looking forward to gaming functionalities for Chromebooks? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
