Xiaomi today unveiled the new Xiaomi 12S series, consisting of the Xiaomi 12S, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and the Xiaomi 12S Pro. This is the first result of Xiaomi and Leica’s collaboration in imaging technology.
A new smartphone, what requirements should it now meet? Many smartphones look the same, but there are enough differences. For many consumers, years of operating system updates and security are an important topic. In addition, for example, a good camera is important for many people. For example, many smartphones cannot take really good photos in dark conditions. Xiaomi is smart about this by collaborating with Leica.
Xiaomi 12S Series Performance and Screen
The Xiaomi 12S series is powered by the all-new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform and built with the TSMC 4nm process. Compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 core is 21% smaller, with both the CPU and GPU delivering 10% better performance and 30% more power consumption. Not only does this significantly reduce the power consumption of the Xiaomi 12S series in standby mode, but it also ensures better heat dissipation. In addition, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 ensures lower power consumption under heavy-loaded app usage.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is equipped with an all-new heat dissipation system. The system is similar to the biological mechanism that leaves of a plant can use to absorb water. This three-dimensional cooling pump is designed with a series of channels that use a capillary network to actively pump coolant. The coolant is condensed opposite the warm areas. This greatly improves efficiency and increases the thermal conductivity of a single unit by 100%, compared to traditional VC heat dissipation systems.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra and 12S Pro feature a 6.73 inch AMOLED color display with E5 luminescent material, which displays a professional level of detail, clarity and color. In addition, the devices have a peak brightness of 1500 nits, 2K resolution, P3 gamma and 1-120Hz Apative Sync Pro. The Xiaomi 12S is slightly more compact at 6.28 inches and also features a P3 color gamut display, HDR10+ and 120hz Adaptive Sync.
Cameras
The new Xiaomi 12S series features imaging systems designed by Xiaomi and Leica, such as Leica Summicron lenses and Leica image profiles. The systems are intended to allow creatives to run wild while preserving the authentic style of Leica images. Combining Leica’s expertise in optics, image processing and image quality with Xiaomi’s experience in smartphone photography, the Xiaomi 12S series offers good image quality and colors that closely match Leica’s look and feel.
Xiaomi and Leica have jointly developed advanced optical lenses. The flagship model, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, uses Leica’s optical design capabilities in its lens system, while adhering to rigorous optical quality testing standards. In addition, Xiaomi’s expertise in component size reduction ensures ultra-high resolution, ultra-high light sensitivity, reduced dispersion and lower flare.
Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s primary camera uses an 8P aspherical lens to solve common photography challenges such as flare, ghosting and chromatic aberration. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s camera module also adds a layer of anti-reflection over the lens, a lens edge ink layer, cyclic olefin copolymer material and an infrared light filter with spin coating technology. Together, these features provide clearer images, which are consistent across all lenses.
Leica look
In addition to the advanced optical design, the Xiaomi 12S series also uses Leica image profiles, adopting the age-old imagery and mimicking Leica’s tone and appearance with the help of algorithms. For the end user, this means access to two photography styles: the ‘Leica Authentic Look’ and ‘Leica Vibrant Look’:
• Leica Authentic Look – strives for the natural imagery that Leica is known for. By preserving contrast of light and shadow, it adds a sense of three-dimensional depth to photos. This keeps the smartphone Leica’s proven light and shadow appearance.
• Leica Vibrant Look – features input from both Xiaomi and Leica. By combining Xiaomi’s experience in smartphone photography with Leica’s industry-leading image finishing, every photographer can capture emotion in images.
Professional wide-angle camera with large 1 inch sensor
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is equipped with Sony’s IMX989 1” sensor, which contains a pixel array of four layers and an individual pixel size of 1.6μm. After pixel binning, the pixel size becomes 3.2μm, reducing noise, increasing dynamic range, capturing more light and obtaining better low-light images. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the first Android device to support Dolby Vision HDR video recording and video playback. Dolby Vision enhances videos with vibrant colors, sharp contrast ratio and richer details, making picture quality more vivid and refined. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra uses HyperOIS for very stable performance and continuously compensates for movements while recording videos. HyperOIS takes advantage of the gap between two frames to direct the OIS engine to its original position so that each frame stabilizes completely.
Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro
The Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro are equipped with Sony’s IMX707 as the main sensor, which contains both a large sensor size and large pixels, with 1/1.28” and 2 and 2.44μm post pixel binning. The Xiaomi Al Image Solution and Xiaomi ProFocus allow these sensors to start up quickly and capture image continuously. The two smartphones support a very fast burst mode of 30 fps and good photo opportunities in low light. Thanks to the All-scene snapshot, you can also more easily capture every moment.
The Xiaomi 12S series has also been designed to be more photographer-friendly in post-production. The entire series supports 10-bit RAW files, calibrated by Adobe Labs, with color-correcting metadata integrated into the files. Adobe Camera RAW software will automatically optimize the photos opened in Adobe Lightroom based on the metadata, giving professional photographers a good starting point for post-production.
One smartphone, two Xiaomi Surge chips
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the first flagship model equipped with two proprietary Xiaomi Surge chipsets: the Xiaomi Surge P1 fast charging chipset and Xiaomi Surge G1 battery management chipset. These offer major improvements in battery management and overall user experience. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra supports 67W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging and 10W reverse wireless charging. At the core of the Xiaomi Surge battery management system is a 4,860mAh single-cell silicon-oxygen anode battery and the Xiaomi Surge P1 fast charging chipset, which also supports an output current of 16A with a conversion efficiency of 96.8%. In addition, the Xiaomi Surge G1 battery management chipset offers battery management algorithms.
The algorithms are developed by Xiaomi to protect the battery, monitor the discharge load and accurately predict the battery life. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra also supports adaptive charging to prevent the battery from overcharging, increasing the number of charge cycles by 25%.
In addition to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the Xiaomi 12S Pro features Xiaomi Surge P1 fast charging chips, 120W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and a 4,600mAh one-cell battery. The Xiaomi 12S includes 67W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and a 4,500mAh battery.
