It seems that Xiaomi makes a distinction in the performance of apps on its phones. The Mi 11 performs better in benchmark apps than in regular applications, which has been discovered by the co-founder of the Geekbench benchmark.
Xiaomi makes apps slow
After Samsung and OnePlus, Xiaomi is probably the next manufacturer to artificially adjust the performance of apps on its phone. That finding from John Poole co-founder of Primate Labs, makers of the well-known Geekbench benchmark for phones.
Poole has discovered that his Xiaomi Mi 11 performs much less well on a modified version of Geekbench, he says Twitter† He simply changed the name of the Geekbench apk to that of the game Fortnite. He then found that the “Fortnite version” of Geekbench performs worse on his phone than the apk with the correct name. Poole also made the same observations when he gave Geekbench other names.
So it seems that the Mi 11 underperforms in normal apps and games compared to benchmarks. And if Xiaomi affects the performance of the Mi 11, then chances are the brand will do the same with its other phones. Presumably, the company adjusts the performance of apps to allow longer battery life on its phones.
Samsung and Xiaomi
Xiaomi is not the only Android phone manufacturer that has already been caught slowing down the performance of apps. This month it was announced that Samsung uses software on its smartphones that affects the performance in apps. Following the negative criticism, Samsung has also rolled out an update that allows users to undo the effects. Earlier, OnePlus was also caught on something similar. Xiaomi has not yet commented on Poole’s findings.
What do you think? Do you think it’s a bad idea for brands to build a system that controls performance in apps? Or does it mainly bother you that manufacturers have not communicated transparently about the existence of the system? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
