“You can put your clapping anywhere else”: Angry mail from a nurse goes viral

Nurses are currently celebrated as heroes in Germany and internationally. However, symbolic solidarity is not enough, says a nurse from Berlin. In a Facebook post shared a thousand times, she complains about the conditions in the healthcare system.

The Corona crisis shows how important the work of nurses and other medical personnel is for society. While the majority of the population stays at home, they take care of the sick and corona patients – and put themselves in danger.

Many companies and politicians have publicly thanked nurses in the past few weeks. In some cities, citizens have also made appointments at their windows and balconies to clap for them. Also in Bundestag was clapped last Wednesday. But that’s not enough, says Nina Magdalena Böhmer, a nurse from Berlin. “You can put your clapping anywhere else, frankly,” she wrote in a post on Facebook.

Lower personnel limits no longer apply

In the post, she listed the reasons for her anger: “First we should use a mouthguard and protective gown for several patients. We should continue to work when we have contact with a Corona / Covid-19 patient. Then there will be lower staff limits that have been fought for a long time. ”

The lower limits should actually ensure that there is enough staff for the patients. In intensive care medicine, a nurse may have a maximum of 2.5 patients supervise, there are seven in cardiac surgery. In order for hospitals to react more flexibly to the corona virus, they are no longer obliged to adhere to these limits. For the nursing staff, this means one thing above all: even more stress in an already stressful job.

Quarantine time for medical personnel may be reduced

In her Facebook post, Böhmer also criticized Health Minister Jens Spahn – and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI): “And now we no longer have to be in quarantine for contact [mit einem Covid-19-Infizierten, Anmerkung der Redaktion], we can be called to work earlier, says the RKI! Those who recommend that everyone should stay at home because of the dangerous virus! ”

The institute had quarantine recommendations for medical staff last week relaxed: If there is a risk that doctors, nurses and the like are infected with the coronavirus, they must isolate themselves at home. Home quarantine can be reduced to seven days. It had been two weeks before.

“We are supposed to be the heroes now and are we treated that way?”

“I’m really sad and disappointed, I feel fooled and I can’t believe it. I’m seriously speechless, ”wrote Böhmer on Facebook. “In a profession that has been underpaid for years … where everyone is working at the limit … should we be heroes now and be treated like this?” Instead of symbolic solidarity like the gossip campaign, the nurse wants support in the fight for better working conditions. Böhmer’s post was liked more than 85,000 times and shared more than 70,000 times. In the comment columns she received a lot of approval for her words.

Utopia thinks: In a crisis like the corona pandemic, the pressure on the healthcare system increases: suddenly there are significantly more patients, while the number of doctors and nurses remains the same. It becomes fatal if the medical staff is already working on the edge of the stress limit. Nurses have long complained about staff shortages, extreme stress and poor pay. They deserve more appreciation for the work they do every day – even after the Corona crisis.
