Dutch grammar.

Is the sentence “Did I who asked” correct or should one say “It is I who did it”. In other words, must have be conjugated in the first person (I) or in the third person (that)?

Similarly: “It is you who did that” or “It is you who did that”

Answer

Dear ludo,

The second alternative is the correct one. The grammatical rule is that the relative pronoun “die” is considered a form of the 3rd person in Dutch. The conjugated verb in a relative clause is therefore always “is”, “has”, and the like.
