YouTube lets you swipe through videos: that’s how it works

After Instagram and Tinder, you can now also swipe through YouTube. The new way of watching videos will roll out for your iPad and iPhone starting this week.

Swipe YouTube: Conveniently swipe through videos

Following on from other popular apps, you can now swipe on YouTube as well. A swipe to the right will take you while watching the next video, while a swipe to the left will take you to the previous video.

YouTube lets you swipe through videos: that’s how it works

While swiping, YouTube remembers where you left off, so that you can immediately continue watching. The videos you will see are from your ‘Recommended’ list. This playlist is compiled based on your viewing history and which videos you like.

YouTube is trying to make it easier to find fun content with the new update. Now you have to tap a video to watch it, which many people find less useful than a swipe. If you also want to go back to the previous movie, it has to reload, which slows down the momentum.

Swiping is popular

According to YouTube, the new swipe navigation is therefore more intuitive. Since 70 percent of YouTube’s traffic now happens via smartphones, it’s no surprise that the company wants to make this experience as smooth as possible. In recent months, the video service has already released a lot of updates for mobile devices, including a dark mode and auto-playing videos.

By the way, YouTube isn’t the only app that uses swipe gestures. The dating app Tinder has become popular with it and Stories in Instagram is also a hit, thanks to the swipe navigation.

The update is rolling out this week for iOS. Update your YouTube app to take advantage of it. Is the function not working yet? Then have a little patience. It can take a few days for all iPads and iPhones to update.
