You probably prefer not to run into your ex(s), friends or colleagues on Tinder. If you do come across them, this can lead to strange situations and swipe you prefer to get them off your screen as quickly as possible. Fortunately, meeting exes, friends, family or colleagues can now be a thing of the past – we explain how to hide your profile from these people.
Hide profile on Tinder
Swiping on Tinder can sometimes bring up unwanted memories. Research from Tinder, one of the world’s largest dating apps, shows that 40 percent of Tinder users have encountered their ex(s) while swiping. Family members or colleagues came forward with 24 percent of Tinderers. Collisions with these people were unwanted, according to 78 percent of the respondents who surveyed Tinder.
As a result of the research results, Tinder introduced the option to block contacts last year. The feature was first tested in India, among others, after which the feature became available to all Tinder users in early June. So it is now easier to avoid embarrassing collisions in advance by entering the phone number of the other person in the block list. If the other person has a Tinder account on that phone number, they will no longer see your profile when Swiping. The same applies to your own Tinder feed: the profile of the other person will no longer appear on your screen.
This is how you block contacts
To enter phone numbers of other Tinderers, you can give Tinder direct access to your contact list, or you can manually add the phone number of the ‘person to block’ to the block list. Tinder says ‘not to store phone numbers that are not in the block list’, but if you prefer not to let Tinder see your numbers, it is not a requirement and the function can still be used. How? We have mapped that out for you below.
- Open your profile in the Tinder app
- click on Settings
- Look for the setting Block contacts
- Select the setting and click Import contacts
- Choose the desired contacts and click X Block contact(s)

If the phone number of the contact to be blocked is not in your contact list, Tinder also offers the option to manually block Tinderers. Follow the steps below for this.
- Open your profile in the Tinder app
- click on Settings
- Look for the setting Block contacts
- Select the setting and click the + icon top right
- Enter the name of the person and a phone number or e-mail address in
- click on Ready to block the person

Once contacts are added, Tinder no longer needs access to your contact list. After you disconnect from your contact list, your blocked contacts’ data will remain in Tinder. This way you can be sure that Tinder will no longer search your contacts, and contacts will remain blocked.
- Open your profile in the Tinder app
- click on Settings
- Look for the setting Block contacts
- Select the setting and click the three dots top right
- Click on the option Disconnect from contact list
- In the pop-up choose Disconnect from contacts

With all the steps above, you can easily block contacts in Tinder. Please note, the function only works if your ex, colleague or family member uses Tinder on the ‘known’ telephone number. If the person uses a different telephone number, it is not possible to set up a block.
