Killed Tesla driver ‘already complained about autopilot’

Autonomous driving is still reasonably in its infancy and is only permitted to a limited extent. Tesla is an important pioneer in this field, but an American Model X owner had to drive autonomously. According to the American safety agency NTSB, he had previously complained about problems with Autopilot.

Eventually it should be possible to completely relinquish the steering wheel, but for the time being there are considerable steps to be taken in terms of autonomous driving. This is also apparent from a sad story from the United States. There, a Model X with more than 100 km / h clapped on a center conductor, while the Autopilot was on. The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) investigated the accident and came to the conclusion that the car had left the road on its own and the driver had no longer intervened for the impact. The driver’s phone would also have shown that he was probably working on it at the time of the crash.

According to the safety authority, it is certain that the fault for the accident lies largely with the malfunctioning of Autopilot. What makes the story even more poignant is that, according to Autonews, the NTSB indicates that the owner in question had previously complained about dangerous actions by Autopilot. The 38-year-old man would have experienced a similar problem several times as what ultimately turned out to be fatal. Data from the car would show that in those cases he himself intervened to prevent an accident.

The driver could probably have prevented an accident in this case too, provided he was aware of the failure of Autopilot. Tesla therefore advises drivers to pay attention, even though you can hand over the steering wheel for a long time. The NTSB is of the opinion that Autopilot encourages drivers too much not to do this anymore, but seems to leave it at that ruling for the time being.
