The Municipality of Utrecht reports that it is “[…] wants to create more space and greenery” by significantly reducing the number of parking spaces in the coming years. The number of parking spaces must decrease by 0.5 to 1 percent every year, which comes out to about 750 to 1,500 parking spaces per year. Utrecht also says that it wants to phase out the possibility to park your car with two wheels on the sidewalk in older residential areas.Utrecht residents who do not agree with the proposed parking policy can respond to the plans until 31 December.

Utrecht says it wants to stimulate sustainable mobility with the new policy and mentions public transport, cycling and even walking as alternatives. The elimination of parking spaces would make additional space available for this. Not only is the number of parking spaces decreasing, the number of parking meters is also being drastically reduced. The Municipality of Utrecht wants to reduce the approximately 900 current parking meters by about 30 percent in the coming years. The city center is to have about 9,000 extra bicycle parking spaces.
