Pluses everywhere, including diesel and SUV
Nearly 20 percent of new cars sold in Germany in September 2022 were fully electric. In general, the German car market also had a relatively good month, with a plus of 14.1 percent. Remarkable: diesel is also still doing relatively well.
A total of 224,816 new cars were registered in Germany in September, reports the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), comparable to our RDW. 44,389 of those, or 19.7 percent, were fully electric. That is a striking agreement with the Netherlands, where in the first half of this year about 20 percent of new cars sold were electric.
In total we had to settle for a plus of 5 percent. They have done that better in Germany, because there were 14.1 percent more cars sold in September than in the same month last year. The number of EVs sold was no less than 31.9 percent higher. With 13,724 units, Tesla provides a huge share of EVs and can count on a market share of no less than 6.1 percent on the total. Competitor Polestar records the largest growth in the ‘import brands’ category at 114.5 percent, but still has to settle for a modest market share of 0.3 percent. With a market share of 18 percent, Volkswagen is still the largest brand in Germany.
More electrical power is available in the form of hybrids, which accounted for 30.4 percent of sales in Germany in September 2022. Of the 68,433 hybrids sold, 28,336 were plug-in hybrids, or 12.6 percent of the total. Once again, we note strong double-digit increases compared to last year. Petrol cars were sold 2.4 percent more often and account for 32.2 percent of the total. Diesel did, surprisingly, much better than last year. 21.8 percent more diesels were registered, so that that fuel type now accounts for a market share of 17 percent. Less than ‘electric’, yes.
The average CO2 emissions of a new car sold in Germany in September 2022 was 106.6 grams per kilometer, 4.5 percent less than last year. Good, because the number of SUVs grew considerably. Compared to last year, 32.5 percent more SUVs were sold, so that the body shape now accounts for 31.4 percent of the total.
