Twelve American states are asking Biden for a nationwide ban on sales of new cars with an internal combustion engine from 2035.
Reuters news agency reports that the governors of twelve US states have asked President Biden to support their own intention for such a sales ban. The initiative to do so had already been taken by California, which is invariably taking the lead when it comes to these kinds of initiatives and even applies its own emission standards to the annoyance of the previous president.
Some of the US states choose to use the stricter California standards instead of the national ones. It will come as no surprise that these (democratic) states are now also backing California. New York, Massachusetts and North Carolina are mentioned, among others.
Interim goals
On the way to the ultimate goal in 2035, all kinds of intermediate goals should be set in order to ‘monitor progress’, says a letter to the White House. In addition, it is necessary to look at medium and heavy commercial vehicles (pick-ups and other ‘trucks’), which according to these ministers should also be ‘zero-emission’ from 2045.
Reuters rightly notes that there is still a very long way to go before all new cars sold in the US are electric. At the moment, the share of EVs is, yes, 2 percent.
