15 years, that’s how long you can view 360-degree images in Google Street View. To celebrate, Google is unveiling a new compact Street View camera and a step back feature. Google is also letting its camera cars drive again on the Zandvoort circuit.
Street View 15 years
Google has something to celebrate, namely the 15th anniversary of Street View. All the while, you can already look at the world around you and orient yourself and Street View has been active in the Netherlands since 2009, Google said in a press release. Meanwhile, we are 220 billion images worldwide and Google has found many creative ways to capture the world in images: from camel cameras in the Sahara to snowmobile cameras in the Arctic.
A new camera system is now coming that will allow Google to introduce Street View to even more places. The new camera features the power, resolution and processing capabilities of the Street View car, reduced to a transportable camera system about the size of a cat. But unlike a cat, you can take this camera to remote islands, peaks of mountains or a walk downtown.

Still, it’s not just about the new images, because after 15 years it can also be interesting to go back in time. When viewing images in Street View, the option now appears: ‘Show more dates’. You can then scroll through a timeline of images to see how the environment has changed.
For the anniversary of StreetView, Google had its camera car drive around the Zandvoort circuit on Monday, albeit at 80 kilometers per hour. It has been 12 years since the place was photographed by Google. The photos should be on Street View this summer.
