3 Ways WhatsApp Renews Group Conversations

With the latest update, WhatsApp will make group conversations clearer and better. We discuss the three most important additions.

WhatsApp group conversations update

Group conversations are an important part of WhatsApp and there is a ‘group app’ for almost everything these days. Although these chats are absolutely useful, they also cause a lot of irritation. A few major annoyances are resolved through this update. This one is now rolling out for all phones: it can take a few days before you get it.

1. Immediately clear what the group is for

First, new members are shown a description of the group as soon as they are added. That way they know what the subject is, what the possible rules are and what is not discussed, for example. Currently you can also find this description by tapping on the name of the group.

2. Get caught up

You probably recognize it. You are in a group app where you chat so fanatically all day long that you cannot keep up with what it is about. Suddenly your name pops up and you are asked for your opinion, while you have no idea what it is about. There is no other option than to read back the entire conversation.

WhatsApp will solve this problem with the ‘catch up’ function, loosely translated to ‘let yourself catch up’. From now on you will find an @ icon above the icon to scroll to the most recent message. When you tap this, you will see all unread messages that contain your name. This way you immediately know what the conversation is about.

3. More power for the administrator

In addition, it becomes impossible for admins to delete the founder of a group chat. This person can only leave on their own initiative. People who leave group conversations and then rejoin will also be better protected from now on. This is often no more than teasing behavior from other members, but no less annoying as a result. It is not clear exactly how WhatsApp will protect these users.

The news quickly follows previous reports that made it clear that administrators of a group chat were given more power. They can determine per participant whether they can change the subject, icon or description of the conversation.

A new video player was also added, making it easier to forward videos from Facebook and Instagram. You no longer have to switch apps, but watch videos in a small window within WhatsApp.
