Techzle has been around for 30 years, which is why we look back every week at this week’s edition in 1990. As of today, Techzle 32 is in stores, with a double test of the Audi A3 with the Mercedes-Benz A-class and a meeting with the new Volkswagen ID. 3. But what exactly was in Techzle 32 thirty years ago?
News
Just like today, we let illustrators do their own thing with new models thirty years ago. How crazy that can sometimes go, proves the 32nd Techzle ever made. It contains full-page illustrations of a five-door Peugeot 405: the so-called Peugeot 409. History shows that an actual hatchback based on the 405 never came. Nor did that happen to its successors: except for a few coupes, they remained standard sedans and station wagons. Other great news: the Skoda Favorit got a roll top! This went through life as Favorit Decatop: a very special appearance.
Tests
In a comparative test, two cars are put next to each other that no longer have a (Dutch) right to exist in 2020: the Subaru Justy and a Lancia Y10. The two minis are placed next to each other because they are both equipped with a machine. Although not stripe pullers, the Lancia appears to be the more smooth of the two. It is true that we no longer have a Lancia Ypsilon, but the current generation is still proudly driving around in its home country of Italy. In his ongoing career, De Justy returned to the Dutch road several times as a reincarnated model. This last happened from 2007 to 2011 as the twin brother of the Daihatsu Sirion.
Enthusiasts careful: we also drove a real enthusiast’s car in 1990. This is the Honda NS-X. The headline of the article says enough: “Porsche killer from Japan”. Even thirty years later, the design is still breathtaking. The transverse six-cylinder for the rear axle has 274 hp and gets the Honda at 100 lm / h in 5.9 seconds. Special achievements for the time. Another red sports car also claims its place in Techzle 32. Not a Ferrari, but a Chrysler Viper. Although this car was only intended as an eye-catcher for the Detroit Motor Show, the numerous positive reactions made Chrysler want to put it into production. We drove in the run-up to the arrival of the production model in the concept car.
Reports
Your first car! That’s one for the books. To see what is now useful and above all feasible, a report takes a detailed look at possible first cars. Do you choose a new Suzuki Alto or a used Opel Kadett? A new Panda or rather a Mazda 323 from 1983? All costs are listed.
The front axle is treated in a kind of written ‘Cornelis Schetst’ and in another report the Dutch collect used Fiats 500. The popularity of the ‘backpack’ flares up again and in their homeland Italy the 500’s still drive around in bushes. It shows how such an import works.
Finally, we portray the then 90-year-old Elisabeth Junek. She is known as the first racing woman. She has a fondness for Bugattis and loves car racing, what a woman!
