4-year-old Samsung Galaxy S9 still receives updates

Samsung exceeds expectations when it comes to the update policy of its older phones. The Samsung Galaxy S9 that would normally no longer receive an update still has the March 2022 security update. The update has already been rolled out in Germany.

Samsung is without a doubt the manufacturer of Android devices with the best update policy. In recent years, Samsung has repeatedly promised longer support for its devices. Galaxy devices released before 2019 will receive security updates for four years.

Sometimes it happens that Samsung supports its devices longer than promised, that is now the case again with the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus. both phones were released in 2018 and so in theory they are no longer entitled to updates. Nevertheless, both smartphones will soon run on the security patch of March 2022 Sammobile now rolled out in Germany and it will therefore also reach the Netherlands and Belgium shortly.

The update in question has the firmware version ‘G96xFXXUHFVB4’ and you can read all the details about the vulnerabilities that have been fixed here. It is notable that this update reaches the Galaxy S9 series faster compared to newer phones from Samsung. The update will appear in a notification, but it is also possible to manually check for updates. You do this via: Settings > Software Update > Download and Install

It is not the first time that Samsung has been updating its phones for longer than what was first promised. That happened previously with the Galaxy S8.
