The Dutch expect to hit the road more often in the near future than before during the corona pandemic. There may be more danger lurking, especially for younger drivers.
According to Interpolis, which commissioned the survey among 2,000 Dutch people, 40 percent will be on the road again in the coming period than before the summer. This applies to both transport to work and private outings. According to Interpolis, 7 percent of the participants think they can participate in video meetings while driving. “But it’s really not possible to make video calls and drive a car at the same time,” says Interpolis, pointing out that distraction plays a role in 68 percent of accidents.
In addition, Interpolis looks at the potential danger on the road from young people aged 18 to 24. According to the survey, a third of them indicate that they have been driving faster since the outbreak of the pandemic (33 percent). More than a quarter of the respondents in that age group also indicated that they had become more insecure behind the wheel. “And the most accidents happened between the ages of 18 and 24, so that is certainly a target group for us to keep an eye on,” said a spokesperson for the insurer. The fact that more than a third of young people experience stress when they get behind the wheel does not help either, according to Interpolis.
