Nice to reuse

Over 80 percent of discarded batteries from electric and (plug-in) hybrid cars were recycled in the Netherlands last year. That percentage is considerably higher than a year earlier.
Auto Recycling Nederland (ARN), a partnership between Bovag, Rai Vereniging, Stiba and FOCWA, reports that 83 percent of the batteries of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars that are discarded in 2021 have been reused. In 2020, this percentage was still 70 percent.
Last year 127,537 worth of lithium-ion batteries were collected via car dismantling companies that are affiliated with ARN. In 2020 it was still about 121,020 kilos. Of the nearly 130,000 kilos of lithium-ion batteries, 59,465 kilos have been recovered for 67 percent, according to ARN. This concerns materials such as aluminum lithium, manganese, cobalt, nickel and graphite. The remaining 68,072 kilograms of lithium-ion batteries have been given a new function, such as energy storage. Through this what ARN calls second useapplication, 97 percent of the 68,072 kilograms of lithium ion is recycled. ARN has started to calculate and arrives at the stated reuse percentage of 83 percent for both recycling routes. The legal recycling requirement is 50 percent.
