Almost 20 percent of the Dutch are willing to drive far to refuel cheaper

Depending on the distance to be driven and the savings per liter of fuel to be scored, detouring to fill up with cheaper petrol can make a difference in the wallet. No less than 18 percent of the Dutch are willing to drive for at least half an hour to be able to refuel cheaper.

A survey conducted by Panelwizard on behalf of Acties.nl among 1,084 adult Dutch people with a driving license shows that no fewer than 18 percent of them are willing to drive for at least half an hour if it means that fuel can be cheaper. Young men in particular like to drive to save money at the pump. 29 percent of men in the 18-29 age group indicate that they are willing to drive for at least 30 minutes to save money at the pump. That percentage is 23 percent for women in that age group.

In the higher age categories, too, it is mainly men who are willing to drive extra kilometers in order to be able to refuel cheaper. In the age group 30-39 this is 20 percent (women: 13 percent) and in the age groups 40-49 and 50-59 years it is 17 percent (women: 15 percent) and 19 percent (10 percent). Only among the respondents aged 60 or older, it was the women who were more willing to put in extra time and effort to save money at the pump. Of this group, 15 percent of women indicate that they want to drive in order to refuel cheaper (men: 13 percent).

Detouring for cheaper petrol is not the only way in which the Dutch try to save money on their transport costs. For example, 8 percent of the respondents say that they have sometimes declared travel expenses that were not incurred at all. Here too, it is more men who are inclined to go relatively far for a financial boost. For example, 15 percent of men under the age of 30 would sometimes declare kilometers incorrectly. In total, 7 percent of the respondents under the age of 30 say that they have sometimes used the business fuel card incorrectly. 2 percent of all respondents indicate that they even deliberately drive to be able to declare as much as possible. Whether you actually make money is another matter.
