Successor to Argo AI

Ford has created a new division, Latitude AI. The branch will deal with advanced driver assistance systems and therefore also with autonomous driving, although the fully autonomous car does not seem to be the goal.
Latitude AI is the direct successor to Argo AI in almost everything. That is not surprising, because Ford has invested heavily in that sub-company in recent years. Argo was a collaboration between Ford and Volkswagen, but did not survive despite all the investments. The official explanation is that the brands no longer see any benefit in the fully autonomous car. The big difference between Argo and Latitude is therefore that the latter does not seem to strive for complete autonomy. Latitude AI, which Volkswagen has nothing to do with, does want to focus on advanced driver assistance systems that should make it possible to take your hands off the wheel and eyes off the road under certain circumstances. Think of highways, whether or not in traffic jams. The goal: ‘to make travel safer, less stressful, more enjoyable and less time consuming’.
Latitude AI has 550 employees, all of whom, according to Ford, already have experience in this field. Not surprising, because it concerns the 550 people who previously worked on similar issues under the flag of Argo AI. Latitude operates from the US, more specifically Dearborn in Michigan and Palo Alto in California.
