‘More demand for hybrid occasions, less for electric’

Big gaps between budget and asking price

‘More demand for hybrid occasions, less for electric’

Used cars with a petrol engine are still by far the most popular, but the used hybrid car is on the rise. This is evident from figures from Gas Pedal.nl and Autotrack. Used electric cars are less popular than before and that also applies to diesel cars.

By far the most visitors to used-car websites Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack are looking for a used petrol car: over 60 percent. That is not surprising, more striking is the share that is looking for a hybrid second-hand car. That is now at 22.6 percent. Slightly more than last year, when it was 19.7 percent. Hybrid occasions are therefore in second place in terms of popularity. The supply is still a bottleneck. Just over 10 percent of the used cars on the websites of Gas Pedal.nl and Autotrack have a hybrid powertrain.

While the hybrid used car is becoming more popular and the supply cannot meet the demand, it is a different story for fully electric second-hand cars. 6.5 percent of people are still looking for that, the lowest point since October 2021, while it was almost 11 percent last year. However, the supply does match the demand better as a result; also about 6.5 percent of the used cars offered are fully electric. Gas Pedal.nl and Autotrack say that the SEPP subsidy scheme and the high fuel prices led to a clear peak in search behavior for electric cars last year, but now they do not see the effect of the subsidy.

The biggest loser, however, is the diesel occasion. The demand for used diesel cars has halved in the past year. Second-hand diesel cars are now only slightly more popular than electric used cars, with 7.62 percent demand. Supply (17.37 percent) far exceeds demand.

Average search price

The average search price for second-hand cars at Gas Pedal.nl and Autotrack is now €19,603. That is slightly more than earlier this year, when it was just under €19,000. However, it also turned out that the average asking price was €24,332, so there is still a nice gap between supply and demand in that respect. The largest gap between the average asking price and the average budget is found in used electric cars. They cost an average of €46,278.
