Royal Enfield recalls Himalayan over possible brake caliper oxidation

Royal Enfield has issued a recall for the 2017-2021 Himalayan. Driving the motorcycle on roads sprinkled with brine can cause the brake calipers to rust.

Royal Enfield recalls Himalayan over possible brake caliper oxidation

From the United Kingdom, Royal Enfield had received feedback from a Himalayan with rusted brake calipers. Research has taught Enfield that if driving on roads that have been gritted in winter days and the brake calipers are not cleaned afterwards, they can start to rust.

The oxidation can cause the brakes to drag, which has an impact on the performance of the brakes. In extreme cases, this could lead to an accident.

While Enfield has only been reported from the UK and no incidents have occurred, Brembo said the phenomenon could also occur in other countries where street pickling is practiced during winter, such as the United States, other European countries and South Korea.

Brembo advised to replace the BeBry calipers in those countries with anodized ones that are resistant to brine, after which Royal Enfield decided to issue a recall.

The recall affects the Himalayan with production dates from March 1, 2017 to April 28, 2021, with model numbers starting at ME3FSM249HK411921 through ME3FSM24XMK401568. At the Enfield dealer, the brake calipers will be replaced free of charge by anodized ones. If an inspection shows that the brake pads are worn, the costs for new brake pads will be charged.
