Last summer, Snapchat introduced the new Family Center in-app tool to help parents better understand their kids’ communications in a way that protects their teens’ privacy. The latest Content Controls feature allows parents to restrict access for their children.
Snapchat announces the latest feature for Family Center with Content Controls. This tool allows parents to limit their teens’ access to sensitive or suggestive content in Stories or Spotlight, the two places on Snapchat where people can view content. Snapchat is also working on additional tools around My AI to give parents more visibility and control over the use of Snapchat’s experimental chatbot.
With Content Controls, parents decide for themselves
While Snapchat doesn’t allow unmoderated content to reach a large audience on Snapchat, every family has a different opinion on what content is appropriate for their teens. Snapchat therefore wants to offer parents/guardians the opportunity to make personal decisions.
Community Guidelines visible to everyone
To provide more transparency in the stricter standards that apply to publicly accessible content, Snapchat is now making the Community Guidelines visible for the first time. Previously, these were only shared with media partners and Snap Stars. These guidelines describe:
• What content is prohibited in accordance with the Community Guidelines.
• Which content is eligible to be featured in Snapchat’s Stories and Spotlight.
• Which content is considered sensitive and can be blocked by parents using Snapchat’s new Family Center feature.
Snapchat hopes these new tools and guidelines will help parents/guardians and teens not only personalize their Snapchat experience, but also enable them to have productive conversations about their online experiences. To enable Content Controls, parents must have an existing Family Center set up with their teen.
