Family passwords: Share login details and passwords with other users

Since iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, you can use family passwords. This is part of Keychain and ensures that you can easily share passwords and Passkeys with other Apple users.

Contrary to the name, you can also share these passwords with people who are not members of Family Sharing. You can create groups via the keychain and easily add login details that all members can then use. Useful with your colleagues, family members or friends.

Family passwords

The ‘Family Passwords’ feature for iPhone, iPad and Mac makes it easy to share passwords and Passkeys with a group of your choice. These could be your family members, but also other users with an iCloud account. The condition is that the people have been added to your contact list and use iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma or newer.

Create a shared password group

  • Open Passwords app (from iOS 18 and iPadOS 18)
  • Tap ‘New Group’ under ‘Shared Groups’ or select the overlapping rectangles with the plus button
  • Choose ‘Get started’ the first time
  • Read the information and choose ‘Continue’
  • If necessary, change the group name and add members
  • Select the desired passwords

On a Mac with macOS Sequoia or newer, you can create a group via the Passwords app â–¸ File (in the menu bar) â–¸ choose ‘New shared group’.

Are you still using iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS Sonoma? Then you can create a shared password group via Settings ▸ Passwords ▸ Family Passwords or on a Mac via  ▸ System Settings ▸ Passwords ▸ Family Passwords.

Create new shared group

Of course, you can also create a new shared group for passwords and passkeys afterwards. To do this, open Passwords â–¸ New Group on your iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, open the Passwords app and click File â–¸ New Shared Group in the menu bar.

Then you can change the group name and add members. Choose ‘Create’ and select the desired login details to move them to the shared password group.

Move passwords to group

Do you want to add a password to a shared group? Then you can do this in two ways. Open the shared group in Passwords and select the plus button. Then select ‘Move passwords to group’ and choose the desired login details.

You can also put your finger on a password in the overview on your iPhone or iPad. Or click with a secondary click (right mouse button) on the password in the overview on a Mac. Then select ‘Add to group’ and choose a desired part.

Manage family passwords

Go to the shared passwords group in the application of the same name or via Settings (older software). Open the shared group and then change the group name or members. To do this, tap the i button or choose ‘Management’.

All members can add passwords to the shared group and can also view and edit all login details. Members can therefore change passwords to items you have added. All data is encrypted and stored locally and synchronized with iCloud if desired.

Because you can create multiple groups, you can easily share the login details of different apps and websites with the chosen members. For example, you can share the login details for financial apps with your partner and streaming services with your partner and children.
