Electric KG Torres EVX: ‘500 km range, €35,000’

The fully electric KG Torres EVX, which is also coming to the Netherlands, is making itself heard again. SsangYong successor KG Mobility comes with global figures on range and price, among other things, and they provide an interesting combination.

For those who missed it: SsangYong is now called KG Mobility. That change more or less coincides with the introduction of what is on paper the most important new car in years for this Korean brand: the Torres EVX. That fully electric SUV is completely new and is on an equally new platform. It is not the brand’s first EV – that is the Korando e-Motion – but it is clearly a car of a completely new generation. Moreover, De Torres is not far from our bed show, but must also appear in Europe at the end of this year.

Other than that and what can be seen in the photos, we actually knew very little about the Torres EVX. This is now slowly changing. With a length of about 4.70 m, the Torres is slightly longer than a Kia EV6, although it looks much more SUV-like with its sturdy and high carriage. KG doesn’t go into too much detail about the specs yet, but says interesting things nonetheless. For example, the platform would not only offer the choice between two- and four-wheel drive, but even between front, four- or rear-wheel drive. The future will show how this works out in practice. The capacity of the battery is not yet known, but SsangYong has announced that it is an LFP battery. This is also used by Tesla, among others, and offers a number of advantages. For example, fewer rare raw materials are needed, LFP batteries are said to be more economical and systematic full charging would not result in an accelerated decrease in capacity.

How far can you get with such a full battery? KG says it is aiming for a WLTP range of about 500 kilometers and immediately admits that in practice this means about 420 kilometers. Still neat, especially when you hear the price: according to KG Mobility, the car will soon cost about 50 million South Korean won in Korea for a subsidy, or roughly €35,000. Even if a few thousand euros are added to that for the European variant, that is relatively not much.
