Driving license ownership highest in Drenthe, lowest in Randstad

The much-discussed gap between ‘the city’ and ‘the province’ also seems to apply when it comes to driving license possession. In the more rural provinces, a lot more people have a driving license than in North and South Holland.

A figure from Statistics Netherlands, neatly arranged per province by mobility platform Moby, shows that Drenthe has the largest share of driving license holders. Overijssel follows in second, North Brabant in third and the large Gelderland in four. If we also complete the rest of the list, of course in order of driving license possession, then Zeeland, Friesland, Utrecht, Limburg, Flevoland, Groningen, South Holland and North Holland follow. The last two in particular make it clear that driving license ownership is relatively low in the Randstad area. That is not very surprising, of course, because many people there can usually get by with public transport.

Incidentally, Drenthe would also be the province with the oldest driving license holders in the Netherlands on average. Zeeland is at the bottom of that list: drivers’ license holders are the youngest there on average.
