‘Great readiness’

A third of motorists will not stick to 30 km/h in built-up areas

Roughly one-third of Dutch motorists appear unwilling to comply with the new limit after the speed limit in built-up areas has been adjusted from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. This is evident from research by Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN).

Currently, 50 km/h is the maximum speed within the majority of built-up areas. More and more municipalities are keen to reduce the maximum speed to 30 km/h. Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) – which itself is in favor of such a reduction within built-up areas – has investigated how Dutch motorists view a reduction of the maximum speed within built-up areas.

The survey among Dutch motorists shows that currently 85 percent of motorists are prepared to adhere to the maximum speed of 50 km/h in built-up areas. If it is reduced to 30 km/h, only 68 percent say they want to adhere to the new speed limit. This means that 32 percent of the respondents are not willing to adhere to a maximum speed of 30 km/h in built-up areas. Nevertheless, Veilig Verkeer Nederland speaks of “a great willingness among motorists to adhere to an adjusted speed limit.”

54 percent of road users indicate that they believe that traffic in built-up areas will become safer if the speed is reduced to 30 km/h. Two-thirds of the respondents believe that motorists in built-up areas often speed too often.

Are you prepared to stick to a speed limit of 30 km/h in built-up areas?
