Chamber majority for box in car for notorious traffic offender

If it is up to the House of Representatives, notorious traffic offenders will soon have a box in their car to be monitored. This should prevent them from repeatedly misbehaving in traffic.

The idea of continuing to monitor frequent offenders was already put forward last autumn by the Victim Support Fund. Now the House of Representatives is behind it. Driving behavior can be monitored with a control device. The judge can decide who qualifies for such a box, reports RTL News. The plan was developed with the support of the Central Bureau for Driving Exams (CBR) and can ensure that ‘traffic bastards’ must immediately surrender their driving license when they make a mistake.

The box is now under development. A trial will start this summer in which twenty drivers will drive around with the device for three months. The box functions as a driving lock to unlock the car and registers speed and traffic violations. Ministers Harbers (Traffic) and Yesilgöz (Justice) have already hinted that they want to implement the plan.

According to director of the Victim Support Fund Ineke Sybesma, serious incidents often involve a small group of perpetrators who often go wrong again. “It is important to protect road users against these types of drivers,” she says RTL News. With this measure, the Fund hopes to reduce the number of road deaths by a quarter. That means about 150 deaths per year.
