Electric Volkswagen ID7: electric alternative to the Passat

Volkswagen’s electric ID family in Europe consists of the ID3, ID4, ID5 and ID Buzz. The ID6 also exists, but that SUV is only reserved for the Chinese market. The ID7 will come to Europe. At the beginning of this year, Volkswagen already showed that electric equivalent of the Passat in a sleek sticker sheet and AutoWeek now has the first photos of the final production version.

We found pictures of the Volkswagen ID7 in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology. Although, ID7 … On the buttock we read ‘ID7 Vizzion’. That Vizzion addition is a reference to study models such as the ID Vizzion Concept from 2018 and the ID Space Vizzion from 2019. In Europe you can simply cross out the Vizzion part of the name. How do we know that for sure? Well, Volkswagen has two joint ventures in China: SAIC Volkswagen and FAW Volkswagen. Those two partnerships often produce and sell the same models that differ only in detail and model name. For example, SAIC Volkswagen sells the ID4 in China as ID4 X and the ID4 is listed at FAW Volkswagen as ID4 Crozz. In general, the versions that FAW Volkswagen sells are more similar to the models that you can buy in Europe. Since the ID7 Vizzion is registered by FAW Volkswagen in this article, we assume that the ID7 Vizzion as you see it in the photos will come to Europe, but simply as the Volkswagen ID7.

The ID7 ‘Vizzion’ is very similar to the ID7 as Volkswagen showed during the CES in January in Las Vegas. But without stickers. The electric sedan will have recessed door handles in the body, a recognizable ID front and a buttock with optically linked rear lights. It could just be that the concrete interpretation of those rear lights in Europe will be slightly different. The color scheme of this model is relatively simple, given the wheels. This is done in a contrasting ‘color’.

We can immediately report the first specifications. According to its Chinese registration, this Volkswagen ID7 Vizzion is 4.96 meters long, 1.86 meters wide and 1.54 meters high. Its wheelbase is 2.97 meters. The Volkswagen Passat on its last legs is 4.77 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.79 meters. The ID7 is therefore more than twenty centimeters longer than the Passat and has more than twenty centimeters more between its front and rear axles. The Chinese registration data also show that the ID7 Vizzion has a 204 hp electric motor and weighs 2,122 kilos. The top speed of this 204-hp variant would be 155 km/h. In any case, count on the arrival of several engine configurations. In addition, we expect that the ID7 will also be available as a Variant in due course. In 2019, Volkswagen looked ahead to an electric Variant-like in the Passat segment with the aforementioned ID Space Vizzion.

Volkswagen itself already indicated that the ID7 – which, like the existing ID models, will be placed on the MEB platform – will have a range of up to 600 kilometers. According to a latest preview from Volkswagen on the ID7, the ID7 can charge up to 200 kW fast and will have a 15-inch central infotainment screen. Volkswagen also showed the interior of the ID7. The Volkswagen ID7 will make its debut on April 17.
