Most expensive license plate ever sold: 13.6 million euros for ‘P7’

In the Netherlands, when purchasing a new or used car, you have to make do with the registration number that belongs to the car. In many other countries you can also choose a license plate yourself for a fee, provided of course that the desired license plate is available. As a result, ‘beloved license plates’ are sometimes auctioned for high prices. The most expensive license plate ever has been auctioned in Dubai.

During an auction organized by Emirates Auction, someone paid 55 million Dubai dirhams (AED) for a license plate with a P on the far left and the number 7 on the right of the middle. Converted, someone paid no less than 13.6 million euros for this P7- license Plate. The license plate went under the hammer during the so-called Most Notable Numbers-auction that Emirates Auction recently organized. The P7 license plate enters the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive license plate ever. Proceeds from the license plate will be donated entirely to a food aid program set up by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid of Dubai called 1 Billion Meals Endowment, according to Emirates Auction.

In 2022, the license plate AA8 in Dubai already yielded a huge amount of 8.7 million euros. In the United Kingdom, license plates also occasionally go under the hammer for enormous sums. In the Netherlands, the VVD has repeatedly suggested personalized license plates – also known as vanity plates mentioned – to make it possible in the Netherlands. However, that never happened.
