Across the border

Hardly a day goes by at AutoWeek without us peering far across the border to catch a glimpse of what is happening far beyond Europe’s borders. Yesterday we lifted the Toyota Vitz to the podium and today the Hyundai Mufasa is in the spotlight.
Mufasa? Isn’t that the lion from the Disney classic The Lion King? Certainly. But Mufasa is now also an SUV from Hyundai. The Beijng Hyundai partnership has released the first photos of the Hyundai Mufasa, which is unlikely to leave China’s borders through official channels.
The Hyundai Mufasa is 4.48 meters long and is therefore practically the same size as the iX35 that Hyundai still offers in China. The iX35 is a technically modernized variant of the iX35, which was replaced by the Tucson in Europe in 2015, with its own body. It could well be that the Mufasa will replace the iX35, which is now aging.
The appearance of the Hyundai Mufasa is probably no longer a surprise to the fervent visitor of AutoWeek.nl. As early as February, AutoWeek showed the first photos of the Mufasa in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology and Hyundai recently previewed the model with a study model. The Mufasa has still not been revealed in its entirety, but we can now see the exterior of the final car from all angles. It is overloaded with clean lines and sharp angles, has striking flared wheel arches and a front in which the lighting is housed in vertical boomerang-shaped parts. In any case, the car comes with an approximately 160 hp 2.0 on the Chinese market.
