Between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3

Meet the Polestar 4. The 4 is Polestar’s fourth car and its third EV. Although its name suggests otherwise, the brand new Polestar 4 is not above the 3. It nestles between the Polestar 2 and the Polestar 3 and can travel up to 600 kilometers on a full battery.
Highlight Polestar 4
- Between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3
- Clear Precept influences
- Up to 544 hp and 600 kilometers of range
- Indicative price of €60,000
- Early 2024 in the Netherlands
The ‘model names’ Polestar gives its models do not indicate the place the cars occupy in the brand’s pecking order. Although the Polestar 3 unveiled last year is above the Polestar 2, the Polestar 4 that plays a leading role in this article does not look down on the Polestar 3. Not in both a literal and figurative sense. The Polestar 4 is a size smaller than the 3 in every respect and is also positioned below that SUV in terms of pricing.
Polestar describes the 4 as a model with the aerodynamics of a coupe and the interior space of an SUV. With its slick shape and quickly sloping roofline, the Polestar 4 does not immediately have an SUV-like appearance, despite its ground clearance of 16.6 centimeters and the fact that it is optically overloaded with the necessary cross elements. Why? Especially because of the more elongated shape and the strikingly low nose. But how big is the Polestar 4 then, and how does it compare to the 2 and 3?

Dimensions and base
Where the Polestar 3, like the Volvo EX90, is based on the SPA2 platform developed by Volvo and the Polestar 2 uses the CMA base developed by Volvo and Geely, the Polestar 4 is enthroned on Geely’s modular SEA platform. Variants of that platform family can be found under cars such as the Lotus Eletre, but also under the Smart #1, the Volvo EX30 to be unveiled this year, the Smart #3 and the Zeekr X. The Polestar 4 is 4.84 meters long, no less than 2.14 meters wide and 1.54 meters high. That makes it just under 25 centimeters longer, but also 6 centimeters higher than the Polestar 2. The Polestar 3 surpasses both models in both length and height. What is special is that the wheelbase of the Polestar 4 is 3 meters after one millimeter, while the larger Polestar 3 has a centimeter less space between its front and rear axle.
Not surprisingly, you can store a lot in the back of the Polestar 4. The luggage compartment in the back swallows 500 liters. If you throw the back seat flat, you can store 1,536 liters. The front luggage compartment – the so-called frunk – has a capacity of a modest 15 litres.

Design
Like the design of the Polestar 5, that of the 4 is clearly inspired by that of the 2020 Precept Concept. In fact, the Polestar 4 is very similar. Both the shape of the bumper and that of the two-layered but nevertheless closely spaced headlight units resemble those of the Precept Concept. But there’s more. Just look at the shape of the windows, the ‘hips’ and the rear. You see it right: the Polestar 4, just like the study model on which it is strongly based, does not have a traditional rear window. In fact, it has no rear window at all.

Instead of a conventional rear-view mirror, the Polestar 4 has a display in the well-known place, which shows the images taken by the rear-facing camera placed high on the buttocks. Do you want to keep an eye on the passengers in the back seat from the driver’s seat? That is possible, because at the touch of a button the screen functions as a traditional mirror.
The Polestar 4 has recessed handles in the doors, frameless side windows and its creators always have a large panoramic glass roof that can be darkened optionally electrochromically. The fact that the Polestar 4 closely resembles the Precept Concept also means that Polestar’s newcomer is optically closely related to the Polestar 5 that is scheduled for next year. The Polestar 5 will be a low, stretched model even more than the 4 and will be one place above the 4.
Interior and gadgets
The workplace of the Polestar 4 is reminiscent of that of the 3, although Polestar’s youngest has a more upwardly sloping center tunnel and a horizontally oriented infotainment screen that has a diagonal of no less than 15.4 inches. Polestar screws a vertical screen into the 3. Android Automotive OS runs on the large display. The system developed by Google goes hand in hand with applications such as Google Maps, Google Play and Google Assistant. Don’t worry: the system can simply handle Apple CarPlay. A second screen, but with a diagonal of 10.2 inches, is significantly smaller on the steering column and mainly functions as a digital instrument panel. Polestar tops the 4 further with a head-up display that can conjure up a projection of more than 37 centimeters for the driver.
Rear passengers in the Polestar 4 have reclining backrests and can control the local climate via a display between the front seats. Polestar uses material recovered from PET bottles, among other things, in the 4. Material from recycled fishing nets is used in the floor mats.
Optionally, Polestar supplies a Harman Kardon audio system with twelve speakers and a 1,400 Watt amplifier. For those who give their eardrums the very best experience, two extra speakers can be added to each of the two front seats, bringing the total number of speakers to sixteen.
Of course, Polestar stuffs the 4 with passive and active safety systems, so the new EV is richly equipped with cameras and sensors. The Polestar 4 has a radar, twelve ultrasonic sensors and no fewer than twelve cameras, one of which monitors the driver. Polestar 4 emphasizes that it does not record, but only tracks the driver’s eye and head movements to detect possible fatigue.

Up to 600 kilometers electrically
True to tradition, the Polestar 4 will be available with different powertrains with a single or two electric motors. So with rear or four-wheel drive. Polestar is currently only highlighting the Long Range versions, but the fact that it calls those flavors indicates that there will also be Standard Range versions later. The Polestar 4 is of course not a lightweight. Depending on the chosen version, it weighs 2,232 to 2,351 kilos.
The Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor has two electric motors that together produce 544 hp and 686 Nm. This most powerful version stomps to a speed of 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds. In the bottom is a 102 kWh (94 kWh usable) large battery pack that gives this engine version a WLTP range of up to 564 kilometers. As a Long Range Dual Motor, the Polestar 4 has an adaptive chassis. The top speed of this strongest version is 200 km/h.
The Polestar 4 Long Range Single Motor has a 272 hp and 343 Nm strong electric motor that operates the rear wheels. This Long Range variant also has a 102 kWh battery and with its single electric motor, the Polestar 4 squeezes out a range of up to 600 kilometers. The Polestar Long Range Single Motor accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h. Depending on the chosen version, the Polestar 4 stands on 20- to 22-inch light metal.
An empty battery pack can be filled with new power with up to 200 kW. A heat pump is standard and Vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology makes it possible to charge other devices as well. Handy on vacation. Also useful on holiday: the Polestar 4 Long Range Single Motor can tow up to 1,500 kilos, the Long Range Dual Motor even 2,000 kilos.

Packages
We don’t have prices of the Polestar 4 yet, although we already know what you can pay extra for later. For example, the 4 will be available with packages called Plus Pack and Plus Pro Pack, the second of which will bring the electrochromatic panoramic roof, body-colored wheel arch edges and more ambient lighting to the Polestar 4, among other things. If you go for the Nappa Pack, you get nappa leather upholstery with seats that offer a massage function in addition to a ventilation function. The Pilot Pack brings Pilot Assist to the Polestar 4 and those who tick the Performance Pack get 22-inch alloys, more powerful Brembo brakes, a sportier tuned chassis and gold finish on the brake calipers and seatbelts.
The Netherlands
The Polestar 4 will first be launched in China, where it will be produced for the first time in November this year. The Polestar 4 should be launched in Europe in early 2024. Polestar gives an indication price of €60,000 for the European market.
More Pole star
Polestar has more new models in the pipeline, including the Polestar 5 and 6. The first seems to be a competitor of cars like the Porsche Taycan, the second will be an electric convertible.
