save CO2

Stellantis is finalizing the testing of so-called e-fuels – CO2 neutral fuels – in a huge number of different combustion engines. The group uses e-fuels in no less than 28 different engine families.
After 2035, traditional petrol or diesel cars may no longer be sold in Europe, but cars with combustion engines that like so-called CO2-neutral ‘e-fuels’ can still be sold. Although Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares does not expect much from this exception, Stellantis is still busy testing these fuels.
Stellantis says it tests the usability of such e-fuels in its cars with combustion engines, but does not carry out those tests only on new cars. Stellantis uses e-fuels in no less than 28 engine families (from 2014) to make them ‘e-fuel proof’. According to Stellantis, e-fuels can theoretically be used in up to 28 million Stellantis cars. Does that mean that Stellantis is betting big on selling combustion engine cars that like e-fuels? No, but the group thinks it can contribute to the CO2 reduction. According to the group, by applying e-fuels in existing cars, it can achieve a CO2 reduction of up to 400 million tons of CO2 between 2025 and 2050. E-fuels should not only be used in petrol cars, but also in diesel cars, says Stellantis.
Stellantis has not yet announced which engine families have proven to be suitable for the application of e-fuels.
