Polestar takes over old Saab factory

Years after Saab went bankrupt for the last time, remnants of the brand are still alive, whether indirectly or indirectly. Polestar takes over part of Saab’s production facility in Trollhättan, Sweden.

There seems to be a curse on the Saab brand name. After years of struggle from various parties, it was not possible to make Saab profitable. Things went wrong under the leadership of General Motors, a Chinese consortium could not take over and the Dutch company Spyker, under the leadership of Victor Muller, was unable to make Saab a financially healthy company again. Until recently, remnants of Saab lived on in the Chinese National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), but things are far from smooth there too. NEVS has closed its doors until further notice in the hope of averting bankruptcy. Polestar is not superstitious and adds a piece of Saab history to its portfolio.

According to the German Automobilwoche, Polestar is taking over part of Saab’s factory in Trollhättan, Sweden. For the time being, Polestar will not produce any cars there. It does conjure up a research and development center there, where it will develop powertrains for the Polestar 5 and Polestar 6, among other things. The Polestar 5 is planned for 2025, the Polestar 6 should come a year later. Should Polestar also build cars at its new location in the long term, it will be Polestar’s first factory where it assembles cars itself. There are no plans for that at the moment.
