35 percent more fines issued

Last year, significantly more fines were issued to motorists who used the phone behind the wheel. This is according to the latest figures from the police.
In 2022, 115,575 motorists will be fined because they were busy with their mobile phone while driving. That was more than 30,000 more than in 2021 (85,329). This is a percentage increase of no less than 35 percent. The fine for holding a mobile phone behind the wheel is €380. Next year, another ten percent will be added, with the result that the fine amount will increase to more than €400.
Last year, a total of 179,295 road users were fined for holding a mobile phone. More fines were also issued to motorcyclists, moped and moped riders and cyclists for using mobile telephones. The actual figures are probably even higher, as these are only police figures. After all, boas are also allowed to issue fines for holding a mobile phone in the car or on a bicycle, motorcycle or moped. These figures are not included in the police data.
According to Paul Broer, traffic portfolio holder at the police, the increase in the number of fines is largely due to the commissioning of the so-called MONOcam on 1 July 2021. This camera can automatically verbalize motorists for holding a mobile phone. The police also check motorists from touring cars.
