Ford sends E-Transit with fuel cell on the road

Ford is also interested in the use of hydrogen as an energy source. Over the next three years, it will send an electric Ford E-Transit with fuel cell on board as part of a study into the potential of hydrogen.

Ford says it will spend the next three years exploring whether fuel cell technology can help extend the “zero-emissions range” of the electric E-Transit for high-driving customers. The brand says it expects that the application of a fuel cell will ‘come into its own’ in its largest and heaviest commercial vehicles.

Funded in part by the Advanced Propulsion Center (APC), the Ford consortium of six automotive technology and fleet management leaders is also helping to identify the required hydrogen fueling support infrastructure. Ford Pro is using the pilot project to expand its conversion expertise.

Ford is equipping a total of eight E-Transits with a fuel cell for the practical research. Technical specifications of the E-Transit with fuel cell are not yet shared by the manufacturer.
